Countermeasure against “Cochlo” red tide

When a red tide of “Cochlo” is worried to approach to aquaculture cages, some of the following countermeasures are taken.

  • Suspension of feed supply:
In order to prevent swimming up to red tide layer, feed supply is suspended.
  • Submerge fish cage to deep:
In order to avoid meeting fish with red tide water, fish cages are submerged to near the bottom.
  • Evacuation of fish cage:
In order to avoid entering of red tide water, fish cages are transferred to non red tide area.
  • Clay dispersion:
In order to break red tide cells and make flocculant with broken cells to facilitate sinking down to bottom of sediment, clay such as montmorillonite is sprinkled with water to red tide area.

The following photographs and movie show the manner of sprinkling of clay. Since clay has ability to condense and absorb red tide organisms, red tide is exterminated.
