On November 28-29, 2019, CEARAC held a workshop on the NOWPAP Regional Action Plan for Marine and Coastal Biodiversity Conservation (NOWPAP RAP BIO) and a workshop on CEARAC Medium-term Strategy for Marine Biodiversity Conservation (CEARAC BIO MTS) with experts from NOWPAP member states in Chiba, Japan.

NOWPAP Medium-Term Strategy 2018-2023 (MTS 2028-2023), which RACs’ activities are based on, includes conservation of biological diversity as one of its priority working areas with the main target of development and adoption of NOWPAP Regional Action Plan on Marine and Coastal Biodiversity Conservation (NOWPAP RAP BIO).
CEARAC has implemented various activities on marine biodiversity since 2010, and therefore, led other RACs in development of the NOWPAP RAP BIO. At the same time, development of CEARAC Medium-Term Strategy for marine biodiversity conservation (CEARAC BIO MTS) is one of the CEARAC’s main intersessional projects in the 2018-2019 biennium. Relevant experts of the NOWPAP member states and a contracted international consultant participated in the two-day workshops to discuss NOWPAP RAP BIO and CEARAC BIO MTS.
On the first day, they reviewed considered national strategies on biodiversity conservation in the NOWPAP member states, policies and goals of NOWPAP, and international trends and targets on biodiversity conservation to discuss the workplan and schedule for developing NOWPAP RAP BIO.
On the second day, they reviewed the draft CEARAC BIO MTS to be finalized. They also discussed possible activities of CEARAC for the 2020-2021 biennium.
