The sixteenth meeting of the Inter-Agency and Expert Group on Sustainable Development Goal Indicators (IAEG-SDGs) was held on November 5th-7th, 2025 in Kitakyushu, Japan, and Dr. Terauchi, senior researcher of NPEC participated in the meeting. This meeting, the first of its kind to be held in Japan, was organized by the UN Statistics Division and hosted by Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications.
In the session 6b “Harnessing AI and emerging data innovations to accelerate the SDGs”, Dr. Terauchi presented NPEC’s current work under the title “Developing regional and national indicators for SDGs 14.1.1a, index of coastal eutrophication, with Global Eutrophication Watch”. Global Eutrophication Watch (GEW) is a tool based on Google Earth Engine (GEE) to assess the eutrophication status. In 2018, NPEC developed the NOWPAP Eutrophication Assessment Tool (NEAT) to target the Northwest Pacific region, and GEW is the enhanced version targeting the marine and coastal environments globally. Both NEAT and GEW employ the same approach to assess the eutrophication status, analyzing the level and trend of chlorophyll-a concentration in satellite remote sensing data. He also explained NPEC’s responsibilities regarding the development of the regional and national indicators for SDGs 14.1.1a and reported the results of the GEW analysis using SGLI sensor data (2018-2024) mounted on the GCOM-C satellite of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA).
